How to use this Pace calculator
- Select pace, elapsed time or distance as the result you want.
- Enter the two visible inputs with distance in the selected unit system.
- Select Calculate. Read the average pace and any split times, which assume an even pace.
The formula and method
Pace = elapsed time ÷ distance. Time = distance × pace. Distance = time ÷ pace. Choose the variable you want to solve, then enter the other two.
Time and pace accept mm:ss or hh:mm:ss. For example, 5:00 means five minutes and 1:02:03 means one hour, two minutes and three seconds. Seconds must be below 60; in an hours format, the middle minutes must also be below 60.
The calculator uses 1 mile = 1.609344 kilometres. It reports both kilometre and mile pace, plus constant-pace splits for milestones within your entered distance. Splits and displayed pace round to whole seconds.
Worked example
Completing a 5 km run in 25 minutes (1,500 seconds): Pace per km = 1,500 / 5 = 300 seconds = 5:00 / km. Converting to miles (3.10686 miles): Pace per mile = 1,500 / 3.10686 = 482.8 seconds = 8:03 / mile.
Understanding the estimate
- An even-pace split table is arithmetic, not a prediction of race performance.
- Terrain, weather, stops and pacing changes are not modeled.
- Converting a text pace between units rounds it to the nearest second, so repeated switches can introduce a small rounding difference.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between speed and pace?
Speed is distance per unit of time. Pace is time per unit of distance, such as 5:00 per kilometre.
Can I calculate a 400-metre interval?
Yes. In metric mode enter 0.4 km and choose time, then enter the desired pace. At 5:00/km, the resulting interval time is 2:00.
Why did 59.6 seconds become a whole minute?
Displayed clock values round to the nearest second and carry into the next minute or hour when needed.
